Climate and Roma Women

WomanUp Foundation is implementing a small research project targeting young Roma women and young Roma mothers (18+) in the Vratsa region, with the aim of exploring how climate and environmental challenges impact their daily lives, care and health.

Methodology

The project will use a participatory approach to shape the research themes and questions. Through community conversations (listening circles) and individual interviews, knowledge will be gathered about how climate conditions, housing, access to water, heat waves and pollution intersect with poverty, discrimination and childcare.

Goals

The results will help understand how climate justice can be built based on the real needs and knowledge of young Roma women, and will serve as a basis for future community initiatives.

The project is funded by Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) within the Bridging Movements program, which supports cooperation between youth climate organizations and social movements. The research will be implemented in partnership with the Vratsa Youth Center, which supports the connection with the local community and the creation of a safe space for participation.

Climate and Roma Women

On March 6, the WomanUp Foundation team held a series of conversations and focus groups with young Roma women and young Roma mothers in Vratsa. The meetings were a space to share real-life experiences – about housing conditions, the summer heat, access to water, childcare, and the way in which environmental and social challenges intertwine.
