The Power of Knowing: Training on the Rights of Pregnant Roma Women in Bulgaria

We are launching two additional free training courses focused on the reproductive and patient rights of pregnant women in Bulgaria, with a special emphasis on supporting Roman women.

What’s Coming Up?

The training sessions are interactive and include discussions, role-playing, and practical exercises. Key topics covered include:

  • Women’s and human rights during pregnancy and childbirth

  • Informed consent – what it is, how it is given, and when it can be withdrawn

  • Care with respect and dignity – ensuring treatment without insults, violence, or humiliation

  • Autonomy – participation in your birth plan

  • Access to information and skills for asking questions

  • The right to a companion and emotional support

  • Postpartum care and breastfeeding – understanding what adequate assistance means

  • Recognizing discrimination and taking action when rights are violated

  • Mental health and emotional well-being

Why is This Training Important?

Knowing your rights is the first step toward security, justice, and good health practices. Our goal is for every woman to feel more confident and prepared, to have practical tools at her disposal, and to participate in the birth process alongside medical professionals—as an active and respected partner.

The project is implemented with the support of the Sofia Platform Foundation under the PROTEUS program.
